“But don’t think you were born too late. Everyone has that illusion. But you aren’t. The only problem is if you think too late.”

Diana Vreeland

“I think part of my success as an editor came from never worrying about a fact, a cause, an atmosphere. It was me — projecting to the public. That was my job. I think I always had a perfectly clear view of what was possible for the public. GIVE ‘EM WHAT THEY NEVER KNEW THEY WANTED.”

Diana Vreeland

“Style was a standard. Didn’t hurt anyone… But you gotta have style. It helps you get down the stairs. It helps you get up in the morning. It’s a way of life. Without it, you’re nobody. I’m not talking about lots of clothes.”

Diana Vreeland

“What’s extraordinary is the way everything modern fits in with everything old. It’s all a matter of combining. There’s no beginning or end there — only continuity.”

Diana Vreeland

“I think stars are the only thing we have. We have a star, we follow a star… we may throw that star out tomorrow, but today, without a star, we wouldn’t move at all.”

Diana Vreeland

”Whatever the fashion, the important thing is time for upkeep. We take it for granted that a girl gets the best she can for herself. But, if she doesn’t keep it up, if it isn’t in beautiful condition,if the shoes aren’t cleaned before she wears them every day and her bag isn’t cleaned and everything in it cleaned, she’ll never look like anything.”

Diana Vreeland

What is a Fashion Creator?

“Before even the technique, there is a dream. Chanel had it. The dream is everything”.

Diana Vreeland

I believe you see, in the dream.

I think we only live through our dreams and our imagination. That’s the only reality we really ever know.

Diana Vreeland

“Does anyone read a picture book from the beginning? I don’t. That’s one reason I think the Japanese are so smart — it’s instinctive to start at the end.

The eye has to travel

I have the kind of eye that will travel over a magazine page, find a tiny, insignificant-looking detail no bigger than your fingernail — and get totally mesmerized. My immediate instinct is to want to blow it up — making it big!”
